National Roast Dinner Day
12 October 2011
National Roast Dinner Day led to a 20% increase in school meals.
On 12 October 2011 The Farm Kitchen hosted a Food for Life Partnership Roast Dinner Day for Primary Schools in Lincolnshire to enjoy an organic/locally sourced roast dinner with pupils and school staff. The event celebrated the fabulous food being served and the work schools are doing to transform food culture through cooking, growing and visiting farms. Roast Dinner Day also celebrates The Farm Kitchen’s staff for their commitment to providing healthy, freshly prepared meals.
All schools throughout England had been invited to take part in the Food for Life Partnership Roast Dinner Day. Last year, over 6850 schools and 28 caterers participated, serving more than one million roast dinners on the same day.
Jeanette Orrey, School Meals Policy Advisor and former school cook who inspired Jamie Oliver’s school dinner campaign, says:
"The Food for Life Partnership Roast Dinner Day is all about celebrating the fantastic catering staff, who are serving freshly prepared food for our children every day, as well as celebrating how far we've come in improving school meals across the country.
"It’s about engaging parents and local communities in creating a better food culture for all. It’s about highlighting the importance of good, healthy school dinners and educating children about where their food comes from through growing, cooking and farm visits.
Victoria Howe, Director of The Farm Kitchen:
“We are delighted to be working with the Food for Life Partnership - our National Roast Dinner Day menu has led to over 20% increase in orders. It is a fantastic opportunity for parents and children to try a hot school lunch. I hold a passion and belief in the importance of food, in particular for children, and strongly believe that all children can benefit in a wide number of ways from eating meals that are nutritious, healthy and enjoyable.”
